Family of Garret^5 Van Wicklin

Garret^5 Van Wicklin (Paul^4, Garret^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes), b. 1762, Wolver Hollow, NY
Married: Rachel Frost (b. 1761) 13 November 1783 Rhinebeck RDC, Dutchess, NY
Children: (Garret and Rachel allegedly have several sons and daughters but their names have yet to be documented. The
following names are offered for the following reasons: Abram and his wife, Elizabeth's three daughters are buried in Carr Cemetery with Garret and Rachel. Benjamin^6 Van Wicklin is
listed as a cousin of Adam Van Wicklin when the two get married one day apart in Leeds County, Ontario, and since the sons of
John and Isaac are known, this leaves Garret and Rachel as the most probable parents.)

2. Benjamin^6 Van Wicklin, b. abt. 1791, NY (see Benjamin Van Weakley in 1851 census for Elgin County Southwold Twp, Canada West census below)
3. Garret^6 Van Wicklin, Jr., b. abt 1800, Cramahe, Ont. [1839 Census, Cramahe, ONT lists a Garret Van Wicklin, Jr.; 2 males <16; 1 male >16 [Garret, Jr.] and 1 female >16 [Garret's wife]. It would appear quite likely that this Garret, Jr. is a son of Garret^5 and Rachel [Frost] Van Wicklin and appears to have been b. abt 1800]
(There was an Alley^6 Van Wicklin, who is now presumed to have been married to a son of Garret and Rachel. Most likely her maiden name was Aladah Carr as she is living in the household of James Carr in 1851 census [source section below], who is presumably her brother. Also not completed accounted for are Vina Van Weakley, b. abt 1794, USA; Polly Van Weakley, b. abt 1796, USA and Elizabeth Van Weakley, b. abt 1811 USA may have been daughters of Garret and Rachel. See 1851 census information in source section below.)
In the 1790 US Census,
Garret is listed as Garret Van Weekly as head of household in Clinton, Dutchess,
NY. Besides himself there are two females (wife, Rachel and one daughter?), and
two males under 16 (Cornelius and ___?)
***There are several Van Wicklins listed on the
VW Strays page that are likely sons of Cornelius and Benjamin Van Wicklin,
however, additional information is needed to substantiate the connections. These
include Benjamin Van Wicklin, Daniel Van Wicklin, Robert W.
Van Wicklin, and Rodger Van Wicklin. Of special interest in Benjamin Van Wicklin
who was b. CAN West in 1824. Benjamin^6 above moves out of Cramahe Township
after 1822, so a Benjamin Van Wicklin, b. 1824 in Canada West (York, ONT.) could
possibly be his son. The naming pattern might also provide a clue. Perhaps
Benjamin gave all his sons Christian names such as Paul, Benjamin, and Daniel.
Cornelius, who is thought to be the father of Sylvanus... may also be the father
of Rodger William Van Wicklin, who migrated to California.

Garret's parents are Paul and Hendrickye (Remsen) Van Wicklen
Rachel's parents are Benjamin and Adraentje (Remsen) Fraest.
Background information:
Garret^5 Van Wicklen (Paul^4, Garret^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes) was b. 21 November 1762, Wolver Hollow, NY (if one
counts back from the date of his death recorded on his tombstone in Carr Cemetery (i.e. 23 April 1848 at age 85 years, 5 mos., 2
days). (Stoutenburgh notes a bap. date of 9 December 1759 for Garret from church records.) He married Rachel Frost in the
Rhinebeck Duth Reformed Church on 13 Nov 1783. (NY Marriage CD has Gerhard VanWickele m. 1783 to Rachel Frost
(Rhinebeck RDC.) Rachel was b. 1761 and bap. (as Ragel FRAEST) 4 June 1761, Wolver Hollow RDC, Oyster Bay, L.I., NY
and d. 29 November 1829 in Cramahe Twp, Ont, CAN. Rachel is the d/o of Benjamin and Adraentje (Remsen) Fraest. Both
Garret and Rachel are buried in the Carr family cemetery in Cramahe Township, Ontario. (Also buried there are the 3
daughters of Abraham and Elizabeth Van Wicklin. (Note: Garret's brother Jan^5 Van
Wicklen--son of Paul and Hendricke (Remsen) Van Wicklen--was bap. on the same day as Rachel Fraest in W.H. RDC and Jan and Annetje (Hoogland) Remsen--the grandparents--witnessed both
events. Jan and Annetje (Hoogland) Remsen had seven children together--Isaac, Harmanus, Cornelius, Hendricke, Jan, Adrianty, Janatye.
Hendricke Remsen... married Pouwelos Van Wicklen, and these are the parents of Garret^5 Van Wicklen.)
Garret moved to Cramahe in 1801 and leased Concession 8, Lot 12 in the northeast corner of Cramahe Township. Garret and
Rachel had several sons and 4 daughters all born in NewYork in the 1780s and 1790s. Abram^6 Van Wicklin is likely one of
Garret and Rachel’s sons. He m. Elizabeth Carr and they had three daughters. Abram and Elizabeth's daughter's are buried
in the Carr family cemetery with grandparents Garret and Rachel. (Apparently Carr Cemetery,
located on the property that Garret leased in 1801 was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Many Van Wicklins may be buried there but most of the markers
were missing or unreadable. The readable markers (about 15 in all--5 of whom are Van Wicklins) were grouped in a small
fenced-in area in this former graveyard.)
Children: Garret and Rachel (Frost) Van Wicklin apparently had several sons and daughters according to Ontario County
census data--but none are named. These are believed to be three sons of Garret and Rachel, but more documentation is needed
to substantiate these claims.
Benjamin^6 Van Wicklin, b. abt. 1791, NY
[There is a possibility that Benjamin Van Winckle,
b. 1786, NY who married Eunice Hartman 30 Aug 1811, was the son of Garret and
Rachel. If so, there is a whole multigenerational line that could be added here
from information provided by Joyce Carr on her rootsweb pages. Benjamin and
Eunice had several children: Jacob, Erastus Abraham, John, David, Christopher
Benjamin, William Wilkinson, and Lucinda b. between 1811 and 1835. They all
appear to have used the surname Van Winckle] Abram^6

This is most likely the family of Garret^5 Van Wicklin as it was in 1842.

1851 Census for Canada West lists Abram Carr, 52, farmer, b. CAN, with Rhoda, 38, Louisa, 21, John, 18, laborer, George, 16, laborer, Joseph, 12, Abram, 10, James, 8, Mary A., 6, ___ A., 3. Next door is James Carr, 46, Nancy Carr, 36, William, 19, laborer, Henry, 18, laborer, Hiram, 16, laborer, Sarah, 14, Edward, 11, Mary, 9, Ira, 7, Abram, 4, and Alley Van Wicklin, 57. (Is Alley Van Wicklin the widowed spouse of one of Garret and Rachel Van Wicklin's sons? Is she a brother of James Carr?)
